Message from the Head of the Wits School of Governance
Warm Greetings for the New Year to all our stakeholders
As we step into 2025 and are returning or have returned to work, I wish you a prosperous year filled with growth and development.
The Wits School of Governance continues to stand as a beacon of thought leadership, innovation, and resilience, and I am both humbled and inspired to lead alongside you in shaping the future of governance and public policy.
The world we live in today is one of complexity and profound interconnection. Last December, South Africa took on the G20 Presidency. The critical role governance plays in tackling challenges (from climate change to economic inequality, from public health to digital transformation) that transcend borders and will be highlighted during G20 activities and meetings throughout 2025. Our academics and colleagues outside the School will provide thought leadership on various aspects regarding the G20. I encourage you to look out for interviews and events as the year progresses.
We continuously assert that governance is not merely about policy; it is about people. It is about ensuring that every decision we make uplifts the marginalised, empowers communities, and leaves a legacy of progress for generations to come.
To our students, faculty, alumni, staff and partners: you are the heartbeat of this institution. Together, we can inspire more individuals to embark on the journey of studying governance and public policy. Dream big, challenge the status quo, and innovate fearlessly in the service of a better world.
As we look ahead, let us commit to making 2025 a year of impact, collaboration, and shared purpose. The work we do here matters—not just for South Africa, but for a world that looks to us for solutions, ideas, and leadership.
With gratitude and excitement for the road ahead,
Professor Themba Maseko
Head: Wits School of Governance
