New Head of School appointed

Adjunct Professor Themba Maseko has been appointed the new Head of the Wits School of Governance (WSG) in the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management.

Professor Maseko has been Acting Head of School since September 2023 and officially starts his new role on 1 July 2024.

He has held several leadership roles in public sector institutions. He is the first Head of, and was responsible for setting up the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), Director General of the national departments of Public Works, Public Service and Administration, Government Spokesperson and CEO of the Government Communications and Information Services (GCIS), and Director General of the Department of Public Service and Administration.

Professor Maseko has also worked in the private sector, including as Communications Director at Business Leadership South Africa and MD of Damelin Education Group. More recently, Professor Maseko was appointed Director of Executive Education at the Wits School of Governance.

He holds a BA LLB (Wits), an MBA (De Montfort University), and a Senior Executive Programme Certificate (WBS/Harvard).

“I am looking forward to working with WSG colleagues to improve the student classroom experience, offer targeted academic and executive programme offerings and enhance WSG’s role as a thought leader and preferred convenor of key policy dialogues. We will focus on increasing WSG’s world-class research output and policy briefs,” said Professor Maseko.

He is the author of the book, For my country: Why I blew the Whistle on Zuma and the Guptas. He was recently awarded for his courage and bravery at the Inaugural Whistleblower awards.

Professor Maseko is a Trustee of the Board of the Nelson Mandela Foundation and also serves on the Boards of Corruption Watch and the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution.

 He is married with children.
