WSG mourns the passing of Mr Pravin Gordhan

13 September 2024

Wits University is profoundly saddened by the passing of Mr Pravin Gordhan. Mr Gordon was, since 2017, a Visiting Adjunct Professor at the Wits School of Governance.

The University passes its condolences on to his wife, Vanitha Raju, his daughters Anisha and Priyesha, and his wider family, colleagues and friends.

Mr Gordhan, the former Minister of Finance, also held the portfolios of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Public Enterprises, will be remembered for his distinguished political career, his leadership during the fight against apartheid,  for building key institutions such as the South African Revenue Services (SARS) and for his stance against corruption and state capture. Mr Gordhan was an outspoken critic of corruption in government and state-owned enterprises and testified in the Zondo Commission of Inquiry on State Capture.

His role at the School was meant to offer insights and first-hand practical knowledge of sound public service, corporate governance and public sector management.

His appointment was based on Mr Gordhan’s strong views on corruption and financial mismanagement, and principled stance on good governance and transformation of the economy – values and lessons that all the School’s students are trained in.

Head of School, Professor Themba Maseko acknowledged Mr Gordhan’s instrumental role in building and leading key institutions in South Africa as well as his anti-apartheid activism.

“He was a fearless advocate for the truth, that he fought against corruption. May we reflect on Mr Gordhan’s contributions to the public sector and emulate his leadership for better governance.

“Personally, I will remember him for his for the support he gave to me and other whistle-blowers during our time of need”, added Professor Maseko.

Mr Gordhan delivered a Public Lecture on Reform of State-Owned Enterprises in 2022 at our Parktown Management Campus.

He retired from political life in 2024 after selflessly serving South Africa, it’s fight for freedom since his teenage years.
