Leadership and Board Governance

This course is designed to enhance the participants capabilities in vision establishment, strategic foresight and oversight engagements as well as their capabilities to develop structure and entities. It aims to advance the professional capabilities of board governance leaders as they build their value as representatives and members of boards of private and public sector companies with an emphasis on the public sector.

Course outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, you should be able to:

  • Recognise future oriented perspectives, plans, policies and strategies in the context of markets, the economy and state intervention.
  • Identify the parameters for governance action and the manner in which leadership is best exercised within specific private and public sector board contexts including understanding executive management and board functions.
  • Examine key concepts of Emotional Intelligence (EQ): self-awareness, self regulation, motivation, empathy, social kills and mindfulness.
  • Explain social partnerships as a key concept of governance.
  • Understanding PFMA and Legal language interpretation .
  • List appropriate and contextually relevant oversight strategies and tools to monitor and evaluate the implementation of plans and programmes.

Status of certificate:

  • As per the Council for Higher Education (CHE), a short course that does not carry credit towards a qualification on the HEQSF cannot be assigned and allocated NQF levels and credits.

  • Short courses are short learning programmes offered by higher education institutions outside their formal structured undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and they, therefore, do not lead to qualifications on the Higher Education Qualifications Sub-Framework (HEQSF). They serve a range of social and educational purposes, including improving or refreshing participants’ knowledge and skills in a particular field, improving participants’ readiness for specific formal higher education programmes, continuing professional development, learning to use technology, personal fulfilment, social development and good citizenship, to mention a few.   • You will receive a Certificate of Competence on successful completion of this course.

Course content

Module 1: GOVERNANCE AND OVERSIGHT
This module provides participants with the ability to recognise appropriate and contextually relevant oversight strategies and tools to monitor and evaluate the implementation of company and entity plans as well as programmes.


Module 2: POLICY, STRATEGY AND PLANNING
This module provides an exploration of future-oriented policies, plans strategies and practices. It incorporates an analysis of approaches that optimally establish a balance between current and future needs.


Module 3: PUBLIC ECONOMICS AND FINANCE
This module provides participants with the ability to collate economic and finance strategies.


Module 4: LEADERSHIP, PARTNERSHIPS AND PUBLIC VALUE
This module provides an assessment of leadership practices that facilitate the achievement of public value and specific results in complex governance contexts, incorporating an analysis of leadership practices that enhance institutional performance.


Module 5: EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE, MINDFULNESS AND SELF-MASTERY
This module aims to boost the self-development of participants in the governance sphere by introducing them to self- mastery and the role emotional intelligence (EQ) as well as the practice of mindfulness in their professional lives. It teaches them how to relate to others, how to manage their emotions and how to perform at the governance leadership level without compromising their well-being.

Assessment methods:

Summative Assessment: exam or exam equivalent (case study): 80%

Group assignment: 20%

Admission requirements
  • NQF 6 or equivalent qualification.
  • 3-5 years of leadership experience
Course duration and dates

The five modules will be delivered over five weeks in block release format.

Participants will be required to attend class for three days a week, once a month, over a period of five months

Start date: 19 August 2024

DELIVERY SITE

  • ONSITE course delivery is at the Wits School of Governance located in Parktown, Johannesburg.
  • OFFSITE deliveries are offered subject to the commitment of a minimum numbers of participants being registered for the course.
  • ONLINE delivery will require the participant to have connectivity and devices.

WSG is entitled to cancel or change the date of delivery of a programme without notice and for any reason without incurring any liability to individuals who have applied or are enrolled on the programme or any funders of such individuals (“participants” or “funders of participants”).

Without derogating from the aforesaid, and insofar as it possible, WSG will provide the participants or funders of the participants with 30 (thirty days) days written notice of any cancellation or changes in the dates of delivery of the programme.

Insofar as the programme is cancelled or rescheduled prior to delivery of the programme then in that event the participants and funders of the participants will not be charged the full programme fees.
